Piano Tuning After Moving Singapore
Every piano needs tuning after it is moved, whether it is a short move within Singapore or an import from overseas. Piano Tuning Singapore provides post-move tuning for upright and grand pianos islandwide.
Why Moving Destabilises Piano Tuning
A piano in tune is a carefully balanced system: approximately 230 strings under a combined tension of around 20 tonnes, held in equilibrium by a cast-iron plate, a wooden frame, and a soundboard. Moving a piano disrupts this balance in three distinct ways.
First, the vibrations during transport — even in a well-padded vehicle — cause the tuning pins in the pin block to shift slightly. Each pin holds a string at a specific tension; when the pin moves, the tension changes and the note goes out of tune. Second, the change in humidity environment between the old location and the new one causes the wooden soundboard and bridges to expand or contract, physically moving the strings' contact points and altering the pitch. Third, the physical stress of tilting, wrapping, and maneuvering the piano through doorways and corridors adds further mechanical stress to the frame and action parts.
None of these effects makes the piano unsafe to play after a move — but all of them mean the tuning will have shifted noticeably. Professional tuning after settling in the new location is always required.
How Long to Wait Before Tuning
The key question is not whether to tune after a move, but when. Tuning too soon — within days of the move — is wasteful because the piano is still settling into its new environment. The correct approach:
- Pianos moved within Singapore: Wait a minimum of 2 to 4 weeks. Although the humidity zone is similar, transport vibration and the settling process still require this period.
- New pianos delivered from a showroom: Wait 2 to 4 weeks before the first tuning. Plan for 3 to 4 tunings total in the first year as new strings stretch.
- Pianos imported from overseas: Wait 4 to 6 weeks. Temperature and humidity during shipping and on arrival in Singapore's climate require a longer settling period. A pitch raise is likely needed.
- Pianos from storage: If the piano has been in a non-climate-controlled storage unit, allow 4 to 6 weeks and expect a pitch raise to be necessary.
New Piano Tuning
Even brand-new pianos from reputable dealers are shipped and stored under conditions that dislodge the factory tuning. New piano strings are also made from fresh steel wire that stretches significantly in the months after installation. This is normal and expected — it does not indicate a defect.
Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway, and other major manufacturers all recommend 3 to 4 tunings in the first year of a new piano's life. After that first year, when the strings have stabilised, twice-yearly tuning is standard. We can remind you when it is time for each tuning session so you do not have to track it yourself.
Pianos Imported from Overseas
Singapore's tropical climate differs dramatically from Japan, Europe, and North America — the origins of most imported pianos. A piano moving from a dry, temperate factory or warehouse environment to Singapore's 70–90% relative humidity will absorb significant moisture. The wooden parts swell, the soundboard crown changes, and the overall pitch often rises during the acclimatisation period before eventually settling.
For imported pianos, we recommend waiting 4 to 6 weeks before the first tuning. When we arrive, we will assess the pitch level. A pitch raise is frequently needed for newly imported pianos, adding S$80 (upright) or S$100 (grand) to the standard tuning fee.
What to Tell Us When You Book
To give you the most accurate advice and quote, please let us know:
- Where the piano was moved from (within Singapore, or overseas and from which country)
- How long ago the move was completed
- Whether the piano has been in storage and for how long
- When the piano was last tuned (if known)
- The make and model of the piano
Pricing
Post-move tuning is charged at our standard rates: S$100 for upright pianos and S$200 for grand pianos. If a pitch raise is needed (common for imports and storage pianos), a surcharge of S$80 (upright) or S$100 (grand) applies. We assess this on arrival and confirm before starting work.
