Piano Pitch Raise Singapore — Restore Concert Pitch
When a piano has dropped more than a quarter-tone below A440, a pitch raise is essential before fine-tuning. Piano Tuning Singapore performs pitch raises for all upright and grand pianos across Singapore.
What Is a Piano Pitch Raise?
A pitch raise is a rough first-pass tuning that brings all of a piano's strings up to approximately A440 concert pitch before a fine-tuning session. Unlike a standard tuning — which precisely adjusts each string to exact frequency — a pitch raise moves the piano's overall pitch level in a single sweep across all strings, using only as much adjustment per string as needed to approach the target tension.
The result after a pitch raise is not a finished tuning. The piano will sound much closer to concert pitch, but individual notes will still need fine adjustment. The pitch raise prepares the instrument so that the fine-tuning can be done accurately and will hold well.
Why Is a Pitch Raise Needed?
When a piano drops more than approximately a quarter-tone below A440 — roughly 50 cents — the overall string tension across the instrument is significantly lower than its design specification. Attempting to fine-tune the piano from this state creates a serious problem: as the technician raises the pitch of early strings, the overall frame tension changes and those strings immediately pull sharp or flat relative to the strings tuned later. The result is that the piano cannot be held in a stable fine-tuned state no matter how carefully the work is done.
A pitch raise solves this by raising all strings together in a quick pass, equalising the tension across the frame. Only after this rough equalisation can the fine-tuning work accurately and produce a result that holds over time.
The Physics: Why You Cannot Skip It
A piano has approximately 230 strings, all anchored to the same cast-iron plate and wooden frame. When you increase the tension of any one string, the frame bends infinitesimally and the pitch of every other string changes slightly. In a piano that is only slightly flat — within about 50 cents of A440 — these interaction effects are small enough to manage within a normal fine-tuning session. In a piano that is 100 or 200 cents flat (one to two semitones), the interactions are too large: each string tuned pulls others out, creating a circular problem with no stable solution until the overall tension is first normalised.
The Pitch Raise Process
Our technician begins by measuring the piano's current pitch with an electronic device to determine how far below A440 it sits. If a pitch raise is needed, the rough pass is performed first — moving through all strings from bass to treble and raising each to approximately the correct tension without attempting fine-tuning precision. This pass typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Immediately after the pitch raise, the fine-tuning session follows. In most cases, both steps are completed during the same visit. The fine-tuning after a pitch raise takes the same amount of time as a standard tuning: 45 to 75 minutes for upright pianos, 60 to 90 minutes for grand pianos.
Cost of a Pitch Raise in Singapore
A pitch raise is charged as a surcharge on top of the standard tuning fee. The total cost is:
- Upright piano: S$100 (tuning) + S$80 (pitch raise) = S$180 total
- Grand piano: S$200 (tuning) + S$100 (pitch raise) = S$300 total
When Is a Pitch Raise Needed?
- Piano has not been tuned for two or more years
- Piano has been exposed to a major humidity event (flooding, extended storage in a non-climate-controlled space)
- A newly imported or relocated piano that has shifted pitch significantly in transit
- A piano that has been in storage for an extended period
- Piano sounds noticeably flat even to an untrained ear
After a Pitch Raise
Following a pitch raise and fine-tuning, your piano should sound dramatically better. However, because the strings have just been moved through a large tension change, they will settle over the following weeks. In some cases — particularly when the piano was very far below pitch — a second fine-tuning one to two months after the pitch raise is advisable to fully stabilise the result. We will advise you on this during the visit.
