Piano Tuning After Moving β€” What to Expect

Moving a piano β€” even a short distance across town β€” disturbs the instrument in ways that affect its tuning. If you've just relocated and your piano sounds "off", this guide explains exactly what's happening and what to do next.

Why Does Moving Affect Piano Tuning?

A piano is under tremendous string tension β€” approximately 20 tonnes of cumulative pull across all 200+ strings. When a piano is moved, three forces act on its tuning:

  • Physical vibration β€” transport vibrations can cause tuning pins to slip very slightly, especially on older pianos with worn pin blocks
  • Temperature and humidity change β€” even a short move between buildings exposes the piano to different climate conditions; the soundboard expands or contracts, shifting string tension
  • Settling time β€” a piano that has been stationary for years has its internal components in a state of equilibrium; moving disturbs that equilibrium

How Long Should You Wait Before Tuning?

We recommend waiting 2–4 weeks after a move before booking a tuning. This gives the piano time to:

  • Equalise to the humidity and temperature of its new location
  • Allow the soundboard to stabilise
  • Allow the strings to settle under their new state of tension

If you tune too soon after moving, the tuning may drift significantly within weeks as the piano continues to settle. Waiting the settling period means your post-move tuning holds better and longer.

Exception: if the piano was already significantly out of tune before the move, the 2–4 week wait applies to the final fine tuning, but a pitch raise can be done at any point after the move.

Will I Need a Pitch Raise?

If your piano was already more than ΒΌ tone below A440 before the move, you will likely need a pitch raise in addition to standard tuning. A pitch raise is a rougher first pass that brings pitch up to approximately A440, after which a fine tuning pass is done. The combined appointment takes 90–120 minutes vs 60 minutes for standard tuning.

If the piano was in tune before the move and has only been moved within Singapore (similar climate), a standard tuning without pitch raise is usually sufficient.

What Happens at the Appointment?

  1. Condition check β€” technician checks the action, strings, and dampers, and listens for any issues introduced during the move (e.g. a buzzing string, a slipped damper)
  2. Pitch assessment β€” electronic tuning device measures overall pitch level; pitch raise added if needed
  3. Tuning β€” all 88 notes tuned to A440 concert pitch (approximately 45–60 minutes)
  4. Final play-through β€” technician plays across the keyboard to check stability and catch any unstable strings

What About Moving Within the Same Building?

Moving a piano between rooms within the same apartment or house is much gentler. The climate is the same; the vibration is minimal. In this case, many pianos remain in tune. We still recommend checking the pitch with an app (like PianoPro) a week after to see if the tuning has drifted. If it sounds clearly off, book a tuning.
